How to Detox Your Body in Preparation for a Healthy Pregnancy

Hooray!! It’s 2021 and you’re feeling ready to make a baby . .

Your relationship is stable.

There is money in your bank account.

And your last physical checked out, 100%.

That’s all fine and dandy, but have you thought at all about your body’s toxin load? Cuz we all have one!

The Truth of the Matter

We all pick up toxins from the foods we eat, the air we breath and the products we rub into our skin. Some of those toxins such as bpa and phthalates are gradually lost; however, it does take time. And can you believe that some of them never leave your body at all?

The terrifying truth of the matter is that some of your body’s toxins load is naturally passed on to your baby through the umbilical cord.

Studies have been done and the news is disheartening.

Back in the year 2005, the results of an extensive study of placentas were released. The study discovered 287 chemicals in the umbilical cord blood.

180 of the chemicals are cancer causing.

217 of them are toxic to the brain & nervous system.

208 cause birth defects or abnormal development.

Just this past year, a study was done focusing on microplastics found in the placenta. The extent of this is not yet understood, however, it presents a great concern.

The number of chronically ill children is on the rise. In fact, more than half of our kids now have an actual diagnosis. And this trend is on the incline.

Time is of the essence

When starting a detox program prior to becoming pregnant, it is always best to delay conception for 3 to 6 months, at minimum. As you are ridding your body of environmental toxins, the last place you want those toxins to go is straight into the placenta and umbilical blood.

Schedule an Appointment with a Naturopath or Health coach

If you can afford and would prefer professional guidance, find a naturopath or health coach. You may even be able to find someone who works specifically with women who are trying to become pregnant.

Go Organic

In preparation for pregnancy, one of the best clean living adjustments you can make for your body is to restrict your produce consumption to certified USDA organic, especially those fruits and veggies that are included in the official dirty dozen list.

A new list comes out each year with the twelve produce items containing the highest levels of pesticides. It is so important because consumption of pesticides can lead to miscarriage, birth defects, and can even be passed through breast milk.

Animal products such as meats, dairy and eggs are also items that should be purchased as organic whenever possible. Doing so ensures that you avoid intake of the growth hormones and antibiotics that many of the factory farms are plagued with.

Boost your Intake of Detoxifying Foods

Did you know that there are certain foods that have been shown to have detoxifying properties when consumed?

Here is a list of some good options:

  • wheatgrass – you can purchase this rich source of nutrition from your local Whole Foods retailer and other health food stores
  • bone broths – so much more beneficial than your traditional bouillon, they are popping up all over the place
  • fermented foods – check out some of these sources

Consider these Supplements

Adding supplements to your daily nutritional regimine is another great way to detox your body for pregnancy. Here are some favorites.

The plastics that make up your beverage containers, food storage supplies, etc.

All the materials used in constructing your homes over the years as well as any mold or lead issues, etc.

The quality of the airs you’ve breathed.

The accumulation of toxins in the water sources that you’ve drunk from.

Even the mercury in old dental fillings is something to consider.
